Holiday Home Tour

We all love a good home tour, don’t we?!  I thought I’d share my home, all decorated for the season.  I love decorating for Christmastime.  I’d love to do more.  But I think that there is a fine line between tasteful and Clark Griswold.  Don’t you agree?

Nantucket Style and Inspiration

I just love the coast, don’t you?  The sand, the sun, the breeze, the colors, the relaxed atmosphere… What’s not to live?!  Being a New Englander living in the South, I am torn.  The New England coast is gorgeous and relaxed.  It doesn’t get too hot (although it can), humidity is fairly low, and there is just an atmosphere that I can’t explain.  But I do think that Nantucket, off the coast of Massachusetts, really exemplifies that atmosphere.

I just felt the need to lighten and brighten up my new house, perhaps it is the time of year, and I looked to this little island for some inspiration.

Nantucket Historic House for Rent

You can even rent this one!

Are you feeling inspired?!  I am!  The light and bright rooms, but not totally white.  Little bursts of color here and there.  Antiques mixed with comfy, upholstered pieces.  Traditional yet comfortable.  That is the look I am going for.  Next stop, the fabric store, oh and the paint store to pick up some samples, and the…..  I better stop now!

I Dreamed an Organized Dream

Today is moving day!  I am surrounded by boxes and paper and chaos, but I am so happy!  I have been daydreaming about how the Chateau will come together.  I have some inspiration photos to share.  Perhaps by putting my dreams out there it will force me to follow through!

Let’s start with the kitchen…..

( picture from here)

My pantry is about the same size as this one and the same shape.  Right now it has the ugly wire racks in it.  Those will be changed very soon!

Oh how I hope that I can keep my refrigerator organized enough so that I don’t find penicillin growing in the back!

I seriously love this kids bookcase.  Great organization for all the toys and gadgets. Plus, it can grow up with them.  Now what are the odds that they will actually put their toys away?

I love this book shelf, too!  Books become art, even more so than they already are!

The garage….. or the dumping ground of every house.  I am determined not to let it get that way!  It will be organized, even if it kills me.

Here are my organizational dreams, among other things.  It’s a place to start.  I will be unpacking slowly so that everything goes into its own space.  Wish me luck!

A Sneak Peek

I am certainly in the throes of project management!  There are lots of tradesmen at Chateau Charmant right now making it amazing before we move in.  I thought I would give you a sneak peek at what is to come.  I know that I can’t wait!!!!!

A purple bedroom fit for a princess!  It’s a lot of purple, a lot more than I truly wanted.  She asked for the ceiling to be purple too, but I had to draw the line.

My built-in kitchen buffet is getting a make-over.  So is that little side table.

Hardwood floors are being refinished.  I chose the middle stain.  Not too dark and not too light.

This one is the best make-over yet!  The kitchen is getting a total transformation.  I don’t want to show you too much.  It’ll ruin the surprise!

I am having trouble containing my excitement!  This is the first time I’ve really made over a space.  I’ve changed furniture, paint or some decorating, but never really done a total transformation.  Prince Charming better watch out, I think I’m addicted!

The floors will be finished by the early part of next week.  Then the carpet will be installed.  Cabinet doors will be delivered late next week and we move just in time for Easter.  Talk about new beginnings!!  We are truly blessed!

Rental Home Tour

Well, since my charming little family is on its way out, I’ll share some photos of the charming little rental house we have occupied for the last 6 months.  I feel like we just plopped our stuff down and didn’t do much else.  We still have boxes everywhere and mismatched décor.  It isn’t as organized as I usually keep things and definitely not decorated to my normal taste.  But it has been nice.  We have been cozy and comfortable.

Being within walking distance to all of this has been fun too:

There’s a movie theater, shopping, restaurants, you name it!  I will miss running with the dog early in the morning before the shops open.  It’s so peaceful and I get to window shop too!  And the usual Starbuck’s stop will be missed!  But we are on to new things.  I can’t wait to get decorating our new house and making it our home.  I’ve decided to name it “Chateau Charmant” which means “charming castle”.  Isn’t everyone’s home their castle?  I think it should feel that way!

Breakfast Area–Before & After

I have been reminiscing about my old house.  I think about all the little projects I did there.  It was a new home when we moved in so there weren’t odd spaces or old DIY stuff for me to tackle.  It was exactly the way we wanted it.  So most of the stuff I did to the house was decoration.  Adding this and that, painting, etc.

This was our breakfast area when we first moved in:

This was a homemade cornice above the window.  It added the much needed color to the space.  And the table and chairs were from World Market and took a lot of abuse from a toddler and infant.  But I loved the rug, which I got at Target and still have today.

This is the breakfast area after the kiddos had grown up a bit.  They had destroyed the table and it never matched anyway so I painted it with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Emperor’s Silk.  I bought a very ugly bench for around $50 and painted the legs the same color and upholstered it with a gorgeous fabric I found.  I think the fabric cost more than the bench!

Isn’t it amazing what window treatments can do to a space?!  Prince Charming let me get rid of the boring white blinds and put in bamboo.  I didn’t tell him about the custom curtains until I brought them home.  He was upset until they went up, at that point he “got it”.  He’s coming around on the whole home decorating thing. Smile  The planters on the wall were purchased at HomeGoods.

A little sprucing made a big difference!  What have you done to your house lately?

New England Hospitality

We all know about Southern Hospitality.  There is truly no place like the South for chatting with a perfect stranger just to pass the time in the grocery line.  Or to welcome you with a homemade treat when you move in next door.  But did you know that New England has hospitality too?  I grew up in Connecticut and while I truly feel that I belong in the South, I can’t let go of the warm cozy spaces that you can only find in New England.  The elegant farm houses and the cedar shake houses.  The roaring fires in oversized fire places and creaky, wide planked floors.  You may not get chatted up in line anywhere, but if someone invites you in to their home, you’ll never want to leave.  Check out these rooms that I have used as inspiration.

Just imagine the throw blankets strewn on each couch, a fire in the fireplace, wool socks, some great antiques and a cup of hot cocoa as you watch the snow fall.  That is the New England hospitality that I remember! (and miss!)

Battle of the Beiges

I am having a very hard time picking a favorite beige.  I know that the trend is white rooms right now, but I’m practical.  I have 2 small children and a large dog.  I need something that resembles the color of dried dirt.  Or food crumbs.  I prefer warm tones.  Cream is my favorite white.  And what matches cream better than a great beige, khaki, greige or tan?  I see these beautiful rooms in all of these tones, but I can’t pick a favorite.

Do I go lighter and more khaki?

Or darker and more tan?

Or trendy and greige?

I have narrowed it down to a few great colors all by Sherwin-Williams
