Day 31: I Really Feel More “Together”

First of all:

Second of all: I DID IT!  I made it through my first 31 days series!  Thank you so much to The Nester for encouraging all of us who participated and for giving us all this wonderful opportunity!

31 Days button

I have to say, I truly do feel more together.  I feel organized and tidy.  I know that it won’t always be like that.  Things may fall out of line (or out of a closet) on occasion.  But I have the right tools in place.  My pantry really is more organized.  I can actually find stuff in my closets.  I haven’t forgotten an appointment all month!

So, in honor of the 31 Day to Getting it Together, I would like to recap my Keys to Getting it Together or what I have learned.

1. Do Not Procrastinate! Don’t leave the dirty dishes in the sink overnight, just get it done before bed.  Don’t say you’ll get to the laundry tomorrow, it WILL multiply in 24 hours!  Muster the energy and just get it done.  It really helps!

2.  Just Do It!  Don’t think about it, just do it.  Plan and execute.  If your plan doesn’t go perfectly the first time, you can try again but at least you have a starting point.  And you can do it.  All of my tasks are quite manageable.  They seem large at first but they really are doable.

3.  The Law of Physics Applies!  You know the one, “an object in motion shall remain in motion….”  Once you get started, it’s much easier to keep going.  You pick up momentum and it becomes enjoyable because you are accomplishing something.  Yes, I just went all Big Bang Theory on you.  Sorry.

4.  Look The Part – get up, get dressed, look your best!  It helps you to feel motivated and confident and ready to tackle any challenge.

5.  Have A Plan (but know that plans get broken) – It is always easier to tackle a challenge when you have a plan.  But sometimes the best laid plans need to be changed.  We learn from our mistakes and set-backs (hopefully).  And they help us make better plans in the future.

6.  Embrace the Chaos – the house doesn’t stay messy forever.  Your children are only young once.  You only have one life, and if it is crazy then it is full.  Enjoy it all.

7.  Get Plenty of Sleep – When you are tired,  you can’t get anything done.  When the whole family is tired, it’s a disaster!  Things are left undone, everyone is cranky, important events are forgotten.  Seriously, sleep is sooooo important!

8.  Enlist the Entire Family – Chore charts are back!  The kids have to chip in.  When the spouse looks at you and asks why the house is a disaster, hand him a list of stuff to do that will help.  If even one person isn’t on board with keeping it together, the whole thing will fall apart.

9. There will always be more – There will always be more to clean, purge, organize.  And if you are like me, you will look forward to it.

10.  Be Proud! – You have accomplished a lot!  Take a look around and give yourself a pat on the back once in a while.  It all got done!

Day 28: The Car

My car is gross.  I’m pretty sure there are enough crumbs on the floor to feed my kids for a week.  And hair bands, various wrappers and school stuff.  Let me correct myself – WERE.  I cleaned and organized the car.  Yippee!

On any given day I could have up to 4 kids in my car.  And the ones that don’t belong to me probably go home and tell their mothers how disgusting my car is.  Sorry, was.  I was embarrassed but never took the time to do anything about it.

IMG_6145IMG_6141

I vacuumed and scrubbed.  I think I filled the garbage can!  But now it is clean.  My children have been warned.. they must keep it that way!!

IMG_6225IMG_6224IMG_6220IMG_6219

I even went as far as organizing the center console!  I bought a canvas container from Target that has collapsible compartments in it.  Brilliant!  Now I can keep the hand sanitizer separate from my car phone charger.  And…  I bought some car games and contained them in another canvas container from Target.  I just felt like every time my kids were in the car they were glued to their iPads.  Now they have a mini Bop-It game, car bingo (yeah!  remember that one?), and some question and answer activities.

Day 16: The Armoire

I have very large bedroom furniture.  It is so large, in fact, that at the house we rented we could only fit our bed and dresser.  The beautiful armoire we have had to be stored in the garage.  When we moved into “Chateau Charmant”, it came back to the bedroom.  Having not used it for so long, I kind of forgot about it.  It was pretty empty.

And then I looked into my closet and saw this.

Light Bulb!  (Insert best Gru from “Despicable Me” accent here.)

I got to work transferring all of my tees and sweatshirts and shorts to the armoire.  I folded and arranged.  It was such happy work!

Now it looks like this.

And there is still more space in there!!!  And there is more space in my closet!!!  I really should have done this sooner!  Plus I sent a nice big bag to Goodwill.

(Sorry for the awful photos.  It was cloudy and I just couldn’t get any good light.)

Day 15: The Catch-up Day

Funny Workplace Ecard: I'm taking a mental health day to evaluate why I'm still working here.

Everyone needs these kinds of days.  A day to regroup and get it together.  The laundry is overflowing.  The carpet needs to be vacuumed.  The beds need to be changed.  The dog needs a long run.  No new projects today.  Just get things done around the house so they don’t begin to consume you.

I think a catch-up day is necessary at least once a month.  Think about it.  Plans change.  Something comes up.  We get busy and the days get away from us.  Suddenly we look around and we feel chaotic again.  The best way to eliminate that feeling is to tackle the issue.  Take a day of doing nothing else but catching up on stuff that you’ve let go.

Chaos makes me anxious.  Anxiety makes me cranky and irrational.  For the well being of my whole family I need to minimize chaos.  Today I will be putting away mounds of folded laundry.  I will be wiping down the kitchen counters.  I will be generally putting items away in their rightful places.  I will be responding to emails.  And making appointments that I’ve neglected to make.  I will be catching up on those items that I have let go.  Then I will feel “together”…. Until I need the next catch-up day!

Day 6: The Keys to Getting It Together

Since starting this series, I have heard from a lot of folks that they have thought about organizing the pantry or cleaning out the fridge.  They try to keep a planner but haven’t followed through.  I have also been given tips from others about staying organized and on top of it all.  (There are so many talented bloggers out there!!!)  So far, here is what I have figured out:

Sorry.

I plan on adding to this as I go along, but so far, this is what I have learned.  I am really enjoying this!

Day 4: The Fridge

Have you ever found a science experiment growing in the back of your refrigerator?  I have.  I’m not proud of it.  But I vow to not let it happen again.  Unless it IS a science experiment.  Then I plan on getting an A!

IMG_5055         IMG_5052IMG_5051

I took everything out.  I wiped down every shelf and surface.

IMG_5053IMG_5057

I bought this lazy susan at Bed, Bath and Beyond.  It is a great tool to have in the refrigerator.  Just give it a spin and see what’s there!  Small jars of things don’t get hidden behind large jars of things.

IMG_5058IMG_5059

I love my refrigerator!  It is the new Samsung with the multi use drawer in the middle.  Seriously, it’s genius!  And my freezer has two compartments, too.  The top one rolls like a drawer.  Awesome!

Taming the “Junk Drawer”

C’mon, you know you have one!  We all do.  It’s that drawer in your kitchen that you just toss everything in to – spare keys, batteries, pens, tape, old candy, those crappy toys your kids get in goodie bags.  Yes, that drawer.

Yesterday I decided to clean mine.  And just an FYI, I actually have two of them.

This is just a sample of what I pulled out:

(Sorry for the bad photos.  My digital is giving me trouble lately.  Had to use the iPhone!)

IMG_0676

And I filled the trash can!

IMG_0680

I bought drawer organizers at Target.  I believe these are intended for just this purpose.  Actually, I found them with the silverware.

IMG_0678

After all of the heavy purging I ended up with a lot of stuff.  I designated one drawer for household items we use regularly.  The other drawer was for quick access home improvement stuff like nails, hammer, screwdrivers and paint touch-up.  By tossing all the packaging and keeping only the product, I found a lot of space!

IMG_0683   IMG_0682

Now I am left with an organized “communication” center.  Pads, pens and pencils are at the ready.  Need new batteries?  They are right here!  A picture needs hanging and I know just where to go!  On top of the counter I have quick access stuff – a basket with the dog brush, a note pad, pens and scissors, a box of tissues and a file with school papers.  Plus the phone and my iHome speakers for some tunes while we clean and cook!

Home organization makes me happy!  Next up- THE PANTRY!!!

Validation

Have you ever wondered “Am I any good at this?”

I wonder that exact thing every day.

Lately, I feel like the universe is telling me “Hey!  Have some confidence!  You ARE good at this!”

For example, Tuesday I FINALLY stenciled my daughters room.  Just a focal wall to offset all that purple.  I had the idea in my head to try to mimic the pattern of her bedding.  It seemed like a good idea.  Then I added more to it – it had sparkle like glitter, and maybe have jewels….

Perhaps I went too far…..  But then I did it and it came out better than I imagined!

IMG_5018IMG_5035

(full “how-to” in the future)

Or dinner the other night…. I was following a recipe but decided to cut a little of this, add a little of that…… And I ended up with this….

IMG_5049

It was soooo good!

Then you get featured on Wow Us Wednesdays with Savvy Southern Style and you feel validated.

And it feels amazing!!!!

Getting the Stink Out

I am going to share with you a very stinky discovery.  So stinky, in fact, that I thought about just throwing it all away.  But I experimented a little and luckily, it worked!

It has been cold and rainy here for days.  Weeks, it seems!  So I thought the best way to combat that was to prepare for summer.  I went rummaging in the linen closet for the beach towels.  I wanted to put them front and center for easy access.  When I began to refold some of them I thought “what’s that smell?!”  When I took a whiff of one of the towels, I was shocked!  It stunk like mildew.

So I set out to get the stink out!  First, I did a little research.  I found on the Internet that Ammonia works best, but being that I like all of my remaining brain cells, I decided to find something less harsh.  I settled on white vinegar.

I poured one cup of vinegar into the detergent tray of my washer and about a half cup directly into the washer itself on top of the towels.  I set it to the hottest cycle I could and ran it.  When the cycle was complete I ran it again, with detergent on the hottest cycle.  And when that was done, I dried it like usual.  Guess what?!

It worked!!!!  No more stinky towels!!!  I think now I will be doing every towel in the house!

Furball!

No, I did not get a furry friend for Christmas, thank goodness!  I already have 3!  But right now I am dealing with more fur because my parents’ dog is visiting as well.  And he sleeps on the bed with them.  And my cats do too!  They also allow him on the furniture, which my dog IS NOT allowed to do.  Sooo, my house is truly covered in fur.  I have been looking for some solutions for this issue and have found a few.  If you have the same problem, give these a try.

1.  The Furminator!  This has to be the best pet brush ever.  It really gets every bit of fur, but you have to brush often.  When I take my yellow lab out it the yard for his visit with the furminator, it looks like he shed an additional dog!

2.  Launder often!  My bedding gets gross with cat hair.  I have a short haired and a medium haired cat.  My medium haired cat sheds like crazy and she hates to be brushed.  I have a blanket on the bed that she lays on and it is easy to wash.  Before I wash it, I usually tape it off with a lint roller to get a good bit of the fur up.

3.  Tape Roller!  As I mentioned above, I tape off my cats blanket before washing, but I use it on clothing, furniture, just about anything.  I go through a lot of the tape rollers so I buy them in bulk!

4.  Rubber gloves!  This one is amazing!  Its so easy I can’t believe it!  Wear a pair of rubber gloves and rub them over the furniture in one direction.  You can watch your fur ball grow!

5.  Invest in a good vacuum!  This one saves a whole lot of trouble.  We blazed through a cheap vacuum that said it was good for pets in no time.  Spend the money and buy a good one.  Preferably one with a warranty in case it breaks down.

And if you see me out and about just laugh at the amount of pet fur I have on me.  I know it’s there, but some days it’s just a battle I don’t have the energy to fight!
