Nantucket Style and Inspiration

I just love the coast, don’t you?  The sand, the sun, the breeze, the colors, the relaxed atmosphere… What’s not to live?!  Being a New Englander living in the South, I am torn.  The New England coast is gorgeous and relaxed.  It doesn’t get too hot (although it can), humidity is fairly low, and there is just an atmosphere that I can’t explain.  But I do think that Nantucket, off the coast of Massachusetts, really exemplifies that atmosphere.

I just felt the need to lighten and brighten up my new house, perhaps it is the time of year, and I looked to this little island for some inspiration.

Nantucket Historic House for Rent

You can even rent this one!

Are you feeling inspired?!  I am!  The light and bright rooms, but not totally white.  Little bursts of color here and there.  Antiques mixed with comfy, upholstered pieces.  Traditional yet comfortable.  That is the look I am going for.  Next stop, the fabric store, oh and the paint store to pick up some samples, and the…..  I better stop now!

How Does Your Garden Grow?

I am not a gardener.  I do not have a green thumb.  I go to a Farmers Market for fresh, organic produce.  I greatly appreciate the hard work of others.  But my children desperately wanted a garden and Prince Charming was all on board.  Me, I wasn’t so sure.  My husband works a lot and the novelty of a garden would wear off on the kids sooner rather than later.  Then guess who would be in charge of the garden…. yep, me.  So, after much discussion, we settled on container gardening.  One container for herbs and one for tomatoes.  We’d test this out and see how we do.  If we are successful, maybe next year we can expand.

My kids got right in there!  We bought sage, cilantro, Italian parsley and rosemary for the herb garden (Lowe’s was all out of basil!).  We also got 3 roma tomato plants, a bag of potting soil, 2 decorative planters and a slotted bottom for proper drainage.  Then the planting begun!

The kids are very excited about it.  So far the novelty has not worn off.  My daughter is vigilant about watering the plants when she gets home from school each day.

We are looking forward to some mouth watering tomatoes.  I have used some of the herbs in cooking already.  It has been a lot of fun!

Kitchen Before & After

IMG_4160

Here it is!  The big “ta-da”!  I’m so happy with my kitchen.  But when I first started out, I was not.  I told Prince Charming that the only way I would buy this house is if the kitchen could get a makeover.  I wasn’t kidding.  He knew it.  Now I’m in love!

Here is what we started out with:

IMG_4031IMG_4034IMG_4033IMG_4035

Everything was heavy and dark.  And green is my least favorite color, but notice the color of the cabinets on the island.  Yeah, they had to go.  Even the dark granite took on a greenish hue.  It’s a beautiful space with lots of storage.  I love the backsplash, too.  None of that had to change.  I needed to lighten up the space.  On a rainy day it felt like a cave.

I found a wonderful lady who does all sorts of cabinetry.  I couldn’t get her in here fast enough!  Well, she came in and took all the doors to spray in an off white lacquer.  She called the color Oyster.  I call it wonderful!!  She began spraying the boxes on the same day Above Board Flooring came to lay new hardwoods in the keeping room and sand the existing floors to refinish them.

I was able to come in and snap some photos in between work.

All of this reno stuff is dusty and dirty work.  Notice the light fixture too.  Say “Au Revoir!” to that as well!!!

Now I get to cook in this:

Look how much brighter everything is!!!  The walls got a fresh coat of Sherwin-Williams Kilim Beige paint.  The kitchen island was lacquered in black and the edges rubbed back to reveal the reddish cabinetry beneath.  Just a little nod to what once was.  The hardwood floors were refinished in Minwax Dark Walnut stain and a matte finish polyurethane.

I changed the hardware to a rubbed bronze pull for drawers and knob for cabinets.  (they were all brushed nickel knobs before)

The light fixture over the island was changed to the Lucas 3-light Pendant from Ballard Designs.

I have all of these wonderful storage spaces.  I am truly in love with this kitchen!

It wasn’t until we moved in and the last cabinet door was hung that I realized how lazy I had become in the kitchen.  I had hardly created anything new or experimented with recipes is such a long time!  Buckle up, y’all!  I’m ready to do some cookin’!

Weekly Menu 4/8-4/12

Wow, it feels good to be back!  We are getting settled in at Chateau Charmant and it feels like home!!!  I am getting back in the kitchen and doing some real cooking.  I have all of my kitchen gadgets and utensils back.  It feels so wonderful!

Tuesday – Italian Meatballs with Marinara Sauce

Wednesday – Tacos!  (It is the princess’s birthday and tacos are her favorite.)

I Finally Have Internet!

It has been a long week of unpacking, sorting, moving, being without internet access and being SO HAPPY!  I love this house!  I will be sharing before and after shots with you shortly.  The first to come is the kitchen!  I am almost done unpacking it!!  Stay tuned for next week!
